McHAIR Magic Guide to Happy Hair
1. DO NOT USE products that contain protein, oil, silicone, alcohol, or ethanol as these ingredients will react adversely with tape adhesive.
2. Always shampoo hair in natural growth direction not upside down.
3. Never blow dry on high and HOT. Any type of heated hair appliance should be used with caution. If it burns your fingers it will burn your hair.
4. Do not sleep on wet or damp hair, or leave hair wrapped in a towel to dry.
5. Do not apply conditioner or heat to root and/or tape area as it may loosen attachment.
6. Secure and/or plait hair before:
*Swimming * Sex * Sleeping * Wind * Exercising*
McHair Magic – The Procedure
1. Client with thin, fine hair coloured 48 hours prior, clean and thoroughly dry. If there is moisture left in the hair when applied, the attachment may slip when the hair dries completely. Client cannot shampoo for 24-36 hours after attachment to allow adhesive to cure.
2. Section head for desired placement . Start application from nape and work up.
3. Attach First row at occipital bone from ear to ear
Keeping 1” (2-3cm) from hairline. Do not apply below occipital. Because of the concave curve of the head under the occipital, many find attachments in that area to be uncomfortable and they tend to “slip” easier than other locations.
4. Attach second row approx. 1 “ above ears in brick pattern
To avoid gaps. Leave 2-3mm between tapes and use ½ tape to
Achieve brick pattern. Stay 1” (2-3cm) from hairline. If you need to add an unusually large amount of hair you can place the rows closer together – every head is different and your expertise will help you determine the placement you need to achieve the perfect result. Note: Be sure to leave 2-3mm or approximately 1/8” between tapes (side by side) to allow for free movement.
5. Attach third row 1-2” (2.5-5cm) above 2nd row, again using brick pattern and retaining 1” (1-3cm) distance from hairline.
Proportion is very important in any extension system and adding hair throughout the head rather than in clumps will always give a more natural appearance. We have found 3 rows to work well for most clients with selected pieces where needed to “fill in”.
6. Release crown hair over attachments and MAGIC! Cut and style to suit.
Tips:
• As with any extension system, keep attachments far enough away from the hairline to allow the customers own hair to cover the attachment; and provide the option of wearing the hair pulled back without them showing. The hair around the hairline is also more fragile and prone to breakage.
• When starting a new row, we find it helpful to attach the centre back 1 or 2 pieces first, then move to the front (toward face) of that section. By doing this, if you need to use ½ piece to fill in a gap it will not be near the face where the hair is more fragile and it is being more often stressed with brushing, straightening, blow drying, etc.
• When finishing a row, gently brush through the row before starting the next one to make sure you don’t have any “caught” hairs that will pull and be uncomfortable. This is usually just one little hair and can easily be cut to avoid any issues.
• It is not recommended to attach McHAIR Magic in crown area as it gets more “wear & tear” and is more difficult to cover. However, by strategic placement a few pieces carefully applied in the crown can add that little bit to successfully create a totally natural looking application.
• Using 2 colours (a darker on bottom and lighter on top) gives a beautifully highlighted effect and you can also use the 18” length as the bottom piece and 12” as the top piece for a layered effect.
This is where your creativity can really make a difference.
• We always recommend before and after photo’s to document your work and add credibility to your portfolio.
This is also good protection for you as many women forget how thin & fine their hair is and may think they have suffered some hair loss from extensions.
• Professionals will offer clients a thorough consultation to find out what they expect from hair extensions; whether what they want is achievable; what it will cost them; the maintenance time and cost; how they need to take care of them and the products they need to use.
The Attachment
After sectioning, start at bottom (occipital bone):
1. Use Sectioning Brush or comb to create a fine slice - not too thick but not too thin as either will result in the attachment loosening. If there is too much hair the tapes cannot properly attach to each other and if there is not enough you risk breakage from too much stress on too little hair.
2. Hold slice section out of the way and place first extension
¼” (5mm) from root and lay sliced section on top in natural growth direction. Do not apply too close to the scalp or it will be uncomfortable and will not move freely and naturally.
3. Place second extension directly on top of first extension creating a “sandwich” and press together firmly.
Occasionally there will be one slip or slide out and this is always due to:
• Too much or too little hair in the attachment
• The hair was not thoroughly dry
• Use of products containing proteins/oils/etc.
• Improper placement
The good news is that it is very quick and easy to re-attach a piece, but this should be discussed in your consultation so if it does happen your customer can be prepared and contact you directly.
